Events bring people together, but they also contribute to greenhouse gas emissions which cause climate change. ISEE encourages all attendees to review this page for ideas on how you can reduce your impact before, during, and after the conference.
Before the conference:
Pledge to Jetset Offset: We encourage our attendees to offset your travel through a donation to The Gold Standard, a non-profit organization established in 2003 by WWF and other international NGOs to ensure projects that reduced carbon emissions featured the highest levels of environmental integrity and also contributed to sustainable development. To calculate your carbon footprint and choose which project(s) you would like to support, please visit https://www.goldstandard.org/take-action/offset-your-emissions.
Take the train: Are you along the Eastern Seaboard of the U.S.? Plan to take a train to D.C. Trains can use 50% less fuel per passenger than planes for the same trips, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Union Station is centrally located in Washington, D.C. and will give you access to the Metro Red Line. The Omni Shoreham Hotel is a 0.2-mile walk from the Woodley Park station on the Metro Red Line.
During the conference:
Bring your own reusable water bottle, coffee mug, and/or tea mug. There will be water filling stations in the hotel— no need to buy plastic water bottles.
Utilize Bike Sharing: Washington, D.C. is one of the top cycling cities in the US. Capital Bikeshare makes it easy for traveling to and from the Omni Shoreham Hotel, and/or as you explore Washington, D.C.
Partners & Exhibitors
Limit promotional items, especially paper and plastic. Rather, bring USBs (pre-downloaded with flyers and documents), QR codes (to your institution’s website), and other digital or environmentally responsible options.
How is ISEE working to reduce the conference’s impact?
Conference site: Omni Hotels & Resorts is doing its part to sustain a healthy balance of natural resources in our world while ensuring future generations will have abundant resources to enjoy. As an innovative community partner, Omni is leading by example — showing local communities what corporate social responsibility should look like with simple and practical actions to help sustain our valuable resources. Some of these action/policies include:
- Source food and beverage options on a local level as often as possible allowing us to reduce the carbon footprint of culinary options we offer
- Utilize more energy efficient laundry processes
- Utilize LED light bulbs in all new build and renovated hotels while methodologically converting all other hotels to more energy efficient lighting options
- Single stream recycling program
- Work with vendors and partners to reduce our carbon footprint for procurement activities
- Utilize more ecologically friendly laundry processes
Another reason to feel good about booking your room reservation at the Omni Shoreham DC is as a brand, Omni Hotels & Resorts has partnered with Feeding America with the Say Goodnight to Hunger initiative.
